Cartoning, case packing and carton sealing are related but separate packaging operations. The terms are often mixed together because all three can involve cartons or boxes. The easiest way to distinguish them is by asking what is being placed inside what—and whether the machine is loading a package or only closing it.

What is cartoning?

Cartoning is the process of erecting a folding carton, loading one product or a product set, and closing the carton. The carton may be closed with tuck flaps, glue or another design-specific method. Depending on the machine, product loading may be horizontal or vertical.

Common applications include bottles, tubes, blister packs, sachets, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and small consumer products. The product, leaflet and carton must arrive in a controlled orientation. Browse cartoning machines.

Questions to ask for a cartoning application

  • What are the minimum and maximum carton dimensions?
  • Is the carton pre-glued and flat, or supplied in another form?
  • How will the product be oriented before loading?
  • Does a leaflet, tray or insert need to be added?
  • How is the carton closed?
  • What output and changeover frequency are required?

What is case packing?

Case packing groups finished products and places them into a larger corrugated case, tray or shipping container. The incoming item may be a bottle, pouch, can, jar, carton or multipack. The machine must create the required count and arrangement before loading.

Case packing can involve drop packing, side loading, top loading, pick-and-place or other application-specific methods. Product strength, orientation and pattern determine the appropriate handling concept. Review case packing and carton handling machines.

  • What is the incoming product and its orientation?
  • How many units belong in each case?
  • What row, layer or pattern is required?
  • Is the case erected automatically or supplied open?
  • Can the product tolerate drop loading, or does it need gentler handling?
  • What happens to the filled case next?

What is carton sealing?

Carton sealing closes the flaps of an already packed carton or corrugated case. Tape sealers typically fold or hold the flaps and apply tape along the seam. Glue-based systems apply adhesive and compress the flaps as required by the box design.

A carton sealer does not normally load products into the box. If operators manually pack cases and only the closing step is slow, a carton sealing machine may be the most direct improvement.

Questions to ask for carton sealing

  • Are the boxes uniform or randomly sized?
  • Who closes the minor and major flaps?
  • Will the seal use tape or glue?
  • Are top and bottom seals both required?
  • What are the case dimensions and weight?
  • How will the sealed case be conveyed away?

How the three processes work together

A complete line may use all three operations:

  1. A filling and capping line prepares the primary container.
  2. A cartoner places each container into a retail carton.
  3. A case packer groups multiple retail cartons into a shipping case.
  4. A carton sealer closes the case for downstream handling.

These stages must be balanced. If a cartoner runs faster than the case packer, accumulation may be needed. If carton sealing stops, upstream equipment needs a buffer or coordinated stop logic.

Which machine do you actually need?

  • You need a cartoner if the product must be inserted into its individual folding carton.
  • You need a case packer if several products or retail cartons must be grouped and loaded into a transport case.
  • You need a carton sealer if the box is already loaded and only needs its flaps closed and sealed.
  • You need a combined line when more than one of these steps must be automated and synchronized.

Avoid these common specification mistakes

  • Describing only the box size without showing the product and loading pattern.
  • Using “cartoning machine” when the real need is tape sealing.
  • Quoting maximum speed without allowing for grouping, changeover or rejects.
  • Assuming one machine can handle every carton style without change parts.
  • Planning each machine separately instead of balancing the whole end-of-line process.
