Begin with the code and substrate

Coding equipment should be selected from the information to be printed and the surface receiving it. A date or batch number on a bottle, flexible film, carton or label may require a different technology. Substrate color, texture, coating and curvature affect legibility and adhesion.

Inkjet coding

Inkjet systems can print variable information without contacting the package. Print distance, ink compatibility, line speed and the operating environment should be reviewed. The package must pass the printhead in a stable and repeatable position.

Laser coding

Laser systems mark compatible materials without ink. Material response, contrast, required marking area and safety enclosure needs must be evaluated. A sample-marking test is important because visually similar plastics or coatings can react differently.

Ribbon and contact coding

Ribbon coders are often integrated with flexible packaging equipment to print on film before the pack is formed. The available print area, intermittent or continuous film motion and ribbon compatibility determine the correct setup.

Position in the line

Coding can occur before filling, during film handling, after sealing or on an applied label. The best position provides a flat, controlled surface and enough time for a clear mark. Sensors and encoder signals may be needed to coordinate print timing with variable conveyor speed.

Information for selection

Provide sample packages, substrate details, code content, maximum print area, line speed, conveyor direction and desired print location. Include photos or video of the existing line if coding will be added later. ZONESUN can review integration with labeling, filling or sealing equipment.

Quick decision guide

Decision area What to confirm Why it matters
Inkjet Variable codes on suitable substrates Non-contact printing for many line applications
Laser Permanent marking on compatible materials Requires substrate and safety review
Ribbon/contact Film or label applications suited to contact coding Depends on material, position and machine timing
Integration Trigger, speed, print distance and location Ensures readable codes during production
Buyer’s tip: Provide real packaging samples and the exact code layout. A printer should be selected from the substrate and line conditions, not only print height.
