How to Choose a Sachet Filling System for Liquid, Paste, Powder & Granules

A sachet filling system should be selected around the product first. Liquid, paste, powder and granules behave differently during dosing and can create different risks at the seal area. The packet may look similar from the outside, but the filling mechanism, hopper design, cleaning procedure and achievable speed can be very different.

This is a starting point rather than a universal rule. The correct system must be tested with the actual product and target dose.

Step 1: define the product accurately

A label such as “sauce” or “powder” is not enough. Provide information that affects handling:

  • Viscosity or flow behavior at the filling temperature.
  • Particle size and whether pieces are suspended in liquid or paste.
  • Bulk density and dust level for powders.
  • Moisture sensitivity, foaming, stickiness or static.
  • Required cleaning method and changeover frequency.

Liquid sachet filling systems

Low-viscosity products such as water-like solutions flow easily, which can support fast dosing but also increases the risk of dripping. Product entering the sealing zone may weaken the seal. Nozzle shutoff, timing and product pressure must therefore be coordinated.

Foaming liquids require additional attention because bubbles can affect the apparent volume and contaminate the upper seal. Share the product temperature and whether it contains alcohol, oil or corrosive ingredients so compatible contact materials and components can be reviewed.

Paste and sauce sachet systems

Viscous products need sufficient force and an appropriate product path. A smooth cream behaves differently from a sauce containing seeds, herbs or other pieces. The smallest passage through the hopper, valve, hose and nozzle must accommodate the largest inclusion without blockage or damage.

Stringing and tailing can pull product into the seal area. Anti-drip or shutoff arrangements may help, but the actual product should be tested. Temperature also matters because some pastes become significantly thinner when warmed.

Powder sachet filling systems

Powders vary in bulk density and flow. Fine powders can create dust, while cohesive powders may bridge in the hopper. An auger system is often considered when controlled screw feeding is useful, but configuration depends on dose range and powder behavior.

Do not evaluate accuracy using weight alone. A change in bulk density can alter how much product occupies a volumetric dose. Provide several production samples if density varies between batches. Dust extraction or sealing-zone protection may also be needed for difficult powders.

Granule sachet filling systems

Free-flowing granules can be dosed volumetrically or by weight, depending on the required accuracy, speed and product value. Uniform particles behave differently from mixed-size products. Fragile granules require gentle handling, while irregular pieces may bridge at narrow outlets.

For blends, check whether components separate during feeding. A sample taken from the beginning of a run should have the same composition as one taken later.

Step 2: define the sachet

Confirm the finished width and length, seal style, dose, tear feature and film. Common formats include three-side-seal, four-side-seal and stick packs. The machine forming set and seal arrangement must match the package design.

Film information should include roll width, thickness, material structure, sealing layer, maximum roll diameter, print repeat and registration mark. If the film is not yet finalized, coordinate the machine and film specifications before printing a large quantity.

Step 3: set a realistic output target

State finished good sachets per minute, not only machine cycles. Output is influenced by dose, sachet length, film behavior, number of lanes, sealing time and product flow. A single-lane or multi-lane configuration should be compared using the same product and pack specification.

Step 4: plan cleaning and product changeover

Ask which product-contact parts can be removed, how the hopper is accessed and how residual product is cleared. Frequent flavor, color or allergen changes may justify a system that is easier to clean even if its nominal speed is lower.

Step 5: consider the complete line

The sachet machine needs a reliable product supply and a way to handle finished packets. Consider:

  • Product mixing, holding and transfer.
  • Film loading and coding.
  • Checkweighing, metal detection or vision inspection where required.
  • Counting, cartoning and case packing.
  • Space, utilities and operator access.
