Adjustable filling machine handling different bottle sizes and products

Can One Filling Machine Handle Different Bottle Sizes and Products?

ZONESUN Packaging Knowledge Center

A flexible filling machine can reduce equipment investment, but “one machine for everything” is rarely a useful specification. The correct answer depends on the product, fill volume, container geometry, closure and the changeover time your production plan can accept.

Illustrative guide for machine selection and project planning.

1. Start with the operating range, not the largest bottle

A machine should be selected around the complete set of target formats. Record the minimum and maximum fill volume, bottle height and diameter, neck size, product contact material and required output for every SKU. A 10 mL sample bottle and a 5 L container may technically fit the same conveyor, yet need different dosing hardware and very different cycle times.

For liquid and free-flowing products, review ZONESUN’s liquid filling machines. Thick creams, sauces and gels usually belong in the paste filling machine range.

2. What can usually be adjusted

Common adjustable items include conveyor guide rails, nozzle height, filling volume, bottle sensors and recipe parameters. Tool-free handwheels and stored recipes can shorten changeovers, but the practical result still depends on bottle stability and how much product remains in hoses or tanks.

A flexible line is most valuable when containers share a similar footprint and neck position. Very small, tall, soft or irregular containers may need dedicated guides, fixtures or a different feeding method.

3. Product compatibility matters as much as bottle size

Viscosity, foaming, particles, corrosiveness, temperature and cleaning requirements influence pump choice and wetted materials. Running shampoo after a thin solvent is not only a volume change: it can require hose replacement, flushing and new filling parameters. Never assume compatibility from volume alone.

For aggressive products, compare corrosion-resistant filling machines. Ask which seals, tubing, tanks and nozzles contact the product.

4. Change parts you may need

Typical change parts include nozzles, hoses, bottle pucks, star wheels, cap chutes, capping heads and label fixtures. Inline machines often offer broad size flexibility; monoblock systems can deliver a compact footprint but may rely on format-specific parts. A supplier should state which adjustments are tool-free and which require replacement components.

5. A practical pre-order test

Send representative bottles, caps, labels and enough product for a realistic trial. Test the smallest and largest format, the thinnest and thickest product, and the most difficult bottle. Confirm fill accuracy, dripping, foaming, bottle transfer, cap handling, cleaning and changeover time.

If several processes must share one platform, also compare automatic filling and capping machines and small automatic filling lines.

6. Decision checklist

Choose one flexible machine when the containers have compatible dimensions, the products suit the same dosing technology and changeovers are acceptable. Consider separate machines when contamination control, cleaning time, output targets or radically different containers would make the shared solution inefficient.

Quick comparison

Question Why it matters
Bottle range Confirms conveyor, guides, sensors and nozzle travel.
Product properties Determines pump, seals, tubing and anti-drip design.
Fill range Checks dosing accuracy at both minimum and maximum.
Changeover target Reveals whether adjustments and cleaning fit the schedule.
Buyer’s tip: Ask the supplier to state assumptions, tested conditions and change parts in writing. Final performance should be confirmed with your actual product and packaging samples.
