Flat products need controlled feeding

Pouches, bags and flat cartons can overlap, stick together or vary in stiffness. An automatic labeling system must separate one item at a time and present it consistently to the applicator. Feeding performance is therefore as important as the labeling head.

Friction feeding and paging

A friction feeder or paging machine separates stacked products and transfers them to a conveyor. Material thickness, surface friction, static and flexibility influence reliability. Very soft, curled or irregular products should be tested before the feeder is specified.

Label placement

Labels may be applied to the top, bottom, corner or another defined panel. Product guides and sensors establish a repeatable reference. The label width, length, roll direction and spacing on the backing liner must match the applicator.

Preprinted labels vs print and apply

A standard applicator dispenses preprinted labels. A print-and-apply system generates variable information before application. The choice depends on whether every item uses the same artwork or requires changing data such as dates, barcodes or order information.

Output and integration

Required speed should be stated as labeled items per minute. If a coder, inspection device or collection conveyor is added, its speed and communication must support the same flow. Operators also need space to load stacks and remove finished items.

Samples and specifications

Provide product samples, thickness range, dimensions, label samples or artwork, label roll specification, placement drawing, output target and voltage. ZONESUN can evaluate the feeder, conveyor and labeling arrangement as one system rather than selecting the labeler alone.

Quick decision guide

Decision area What to confirm Why it matters
Product feeding Thickness, stiffness, friction and static Determines whether items separate consistently
Label Size, roll direction and backing material Defines label-path compatibility
Placement Top, bottom or defined panel position Sets sensor and applicator arrangement
Integration Preprinted label or print-and-apply workflow Determines data and timing requirements
Buyer’s tip: For flat products, feeding is as important as label application. Test the thinnest, softest and most difficult sample in the product range.
