How to Prevent Foaming and Dripping During Liquid Filling
ZONESUN Packaging Knowledge Center
Practical equipment and setup factors that help reduce foam, splashing and nozzle dripping during liquid filling.

Why filling behavior changes
Two liquids with similar apparent viscosity can behave differently during filling. Surface tension, dissolved gas, temperature, product elasticity and bottle geometry influence foam and dripping. The solution should therefore begin with a product and package test rather than a generic speed setting.
Control the filling position
A nozzle that fills from too high above the liquid surface can create splashing and entrain air. A diving nozzle can descend into the container and rise as the level increases, reducing the drop distance. Bottom-up filling is especially useful when the product foams easily, but the motion must be coordinated with bottle height and fill volume.
Use staged filling speeds
Many applications benefit from a slower start or finish with a faster middle stage. The initial slow phase helps control impact at the bottom of the container, while the final slow phase reduces turbulence near the target level. The appropriate profile depends on the filler control system and the product.
Address nozzle dripping and product strings
A shutoff or anti-drip nozzle can help when liquid continues to flow after the dosing cycle. Thick or stringy products may need a different nozzle opening, suck-back setting or cutoff design. Excessive suck-back can introduce air, so settings should be optimized during sample testing.
Check the product path
Hose length, hopper position, pump selection and connection size can affect flow stability. Product temperature may also change viscosity during the production day. Record the expected operating temperature and identify whether the product contains particles or tends to settle.
Test under realistic conditions
Send product samples when practical, along with bottle samples, fill volume, target speed and photos or video of the filling problem. ZONESUN can evaluate nozzle movement, pump choice and line arrangement. Final settings should be established with the actual product and container rather than water alone.
Quick decision guide
| Decision area | What to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Foaming | Nozzle height, entry speed and dissolved gas | Reduces air entrainment and overflow risk |
| Dripping | Nozzle cutoff and product stringing | Improves fill cleanliness between containers |
| Product path | Hose length, pressure and restrictions | Supports stable and repeatable flow |
| Validation | Actual product, temperature and container | Reveals behavior that water tests may miss |
