How to Choose a Shrink Wrapping Machine and Shrink Film for Your Product

A buyer's guide to shrink wrapping machines, tunnels and film selection for individual packs and multipacks.
Define the finished pack first
Shrink wrapping can create an individual retail overwrap, a protective group pack or a transport bundle. These results require different sealing and film-handling arrangements. Product size, bundle pattern and the desired seam location should be defined before equipment is selected.
Understand the equipment stages
A shrink system normally forms or seals the film around the product and then passes it through a heated tunnel. The sealing machine controls film placement and cut length, while the tunnel controls heat exposure and airflow. Both stages must suit the product and film.
Film selection
PE, POF and PVC films have different characteristics and are not interchangeable in every application. Film thickness, shrink behavior, strength, clarity and the permitted operating conditions should be confirmed with the film supplier. Machine settings must then be tested with the intended film, not a generic substitute.
Product and tunnel compatibility
Heat-sensitive products require careful evaluation of tunnel temperature and exposure time. Irregular shapes may need guides or special spacing to prevent movement. For multipacks, the bundle arrangement and film strength must support the required handling after shrinking.
Output and feeding
Manual or semi-automatic systems can suit varied, low-volume packs. Automatic systems require controlled product spacing and may use conveyors or grouping mechanisms. The required speed should be stated as finished packs per minute, together with the number of items in each bundle.
