Conveyors and accumulation tables for an automated bottle packaging line

How to Choose Conveyors and Accumulation Tables for a Packaging Line

ZONESUN Packaging Knowledge Center

Conveyors are the connection between packaging machines, not an afterthought. Poor transfers, incorrect guide settings or insufficient buffering can reduce the output of otherwise capable filling, capping and labeling equipment.

1. Define the container and load

Record container footprint, height, full weight, material, base shape and center of gravity. Tall narrow bottles need more support than low jars; soft pouches and irregular packs may require specialized belts or fixtures. Test both empty and full conditions.

Browse conveyor systems when planning inter-machine transfer.

2. Choose belt and frame materials

Belt selection depends on product contact risk, friction, temperature, cleaning and chemical exposure. Frame material should match the working environment. Food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and chemical applications can have different expectations for washdown and corrosion resistance.

Ask which areas are intended for cleaning and how liquid drainage, covers and electrical protection are handled.

3. Speed control and synchronization

Variable-speed control allows the conveyor to match upstream and downstream machines. More speed is not always better: excessive gaps, collisions or back pressure can destabilize containers. Sensors and line controls should define what happens when a downstream machine stops.

Individual machines need a clear start, stop and fault strategy so containers do not continue into a blocked station.

4. Guide rails and transfers

Guide rails should hold containers without crushing, scratching or creating excess friction. Transfer plates, dead plates and conveyor height alignment affect small-base containers. Test the smallest container across every joint and curve.

Adjustability is important when several widths are used, but repeatable scales or recipes help operators return to known positions.

5. Calculate accumulation

Accumulation provides time to recover from brief stops. Required units equal downstream rate multiplied by desired buffer minutes. Confirm the table’s usable capacity with the actual container; nominal surface area does not equal usable accumulation when bottles must remain stable.

Explore conveyors and turntables for transfer and buffering options.

6. Safety, access and maintenance

Provide guarding around pinch points, safe emergency stops and enough aisle space for cleaning and service. Plan cable routes, drainage and access to motors. Conveyors should support production without blocking operators from nozzles, capping heads or label paths.

Quick comparison

Selection item Confirm before ordering
Container Footprint, height, weight and stability empty/full
Belt Friction, cleaning, temperature and compatibility
Guides Adjustment range and repeatability
Controls Speed range, sensors and stop logic
Buffer Usable units and minutes at target speed
Buyer’s tip: Ask the supplier to state assumptions, tested conditions and change parts in writing. Final performance should be confirmed with your actual product and packaging samples.
